“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Mahatma Gandhi was a smart, smart man. Not only did he begin the nonviolent revolution that granted India its independence, he also had a lot to say about the inner life of the mind and heart, and how that inner life turns into action. He had a lot to say about how to be people of substance, able to cause positive change even in (and especially in) places that seem hopeless.
The saying is actually a paraphrase of a longer quote. Check this out: “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him” (elephantjournal.com). Gandhi believed that personal and social transformation were intertwined.
Our latest Refutee pays tribute to Gandhi’s dream of changing the world through one act of love at a time. His most famous saying is printed on the front of the shirt in braille. And since braille isn’t much use unless you can actually read it with your fingers, we’ve etched those words in puffed ink so they stand out to the touch. Because sometimes we have to reach out, we have to touch, we have to experience, before we can understand.
