The holiday season is upon us and with it comes shopping. But more isn’t always better. The time for meaningless gifts is over. Instead of getting your mom yet another basket of hand lotions, take a look at a few ways to find unique gifts without breaking the bank.
1. Shop online
There are tons of shops out there in the physical world, but on the internet, the options for gifts are endless. Looking for a rare trading card? Don’t scour comic shops in despair, just look online. Looking for a mug with the exact right cat on it? Want to get an ice cube tray that makes R2D2 shaped ice cubes? You don’t have to settle for what is kept stocked in shops at your mall. Look online and find something perfectly unique.
2. Buy from independent artist and designers.
Because of the internet, it is easier than ever to find incredible art by independent artists. This kind of stuff is one-of-a-kind and super creative. Talk about a unique gift. Shop around online artist shops like Etsy and Redbubble.
Also, check your local Saturday markets and street fairs. Those are a common place to find local artists selling everything from metal work to painting to handmade soaps. The possibilities are endless. In addition to getting something neat for someone you love, you’ll be helping supporting local, small businesses.
3. Make something of your own.
The ultimate level of original gifting is making something yourself. If you’re crafty or want to try your hand at that, great! You should go for it. But if you don’t want to make something yourself, there are plenty of places that offer customizable items.
There are plenty of shops that offer customizable gifts, whether it is having something engraved with a name or saying, or making a one-of-a-kind tee, hat, or bag. Many of these avenues will offer you as much or as little professional help as you want. So don’t worry that you won’t be able to choose a good design.
When it’s all said and done, the holidays aren’t about gifts, and not even the gifts are about the gifts. The whole point of giving someone a gift is to show them you care about them. So this holiday season, don’t worry so much about getting big gifts or lots of gifts. Get things for people that are meaningful, things that could only come from you. Because it’s you that they really love, not the gifts.
