Something big is happening in corporate America. It’s the rise of the benefit corporation, and it is turning the business world upside down in the best way.
Authors Mary Anne Harmer and Tom Hering have written a book about this incredible growing trend titled: Putting Soul Into Business. Their book gives insight into what it means to be a benefit corporation, for you and for society.
But what is a Benefit Corporation? Mary Anne and Tom put it this way: “Benefit corporations are businesses that consider their impact on society and the environment in addition to making profits” (p. 34). In other words, a benefit corporation is a business that is focused less on money and more on using their resources to make the world a better place.
This book talks about a concept called the Triple Bottom Line, also known as the Three P’s: People, Planet, and Profit. It’s the business model of benefit corporations that want to focus not only on how much money they make, but also their social and environmental impact.
Consumers these days aren’t just looking for products. As Mary Anne and Tom put it, “The status quo no longer represents the social, environmental and multicultural values of our country. Consumers are advocating for these changes using their pocketbooks.” (p. 3) People want change, they want social and environmental responsibility from the companies they do business with.
